Day 1- After you were born, your Daddy and one of the nurses gave you your first bath! You did great and loved having your hair washed (just like mommy). We then moved to our private room and snuggled in for the night. You were up quite a bit, but didn’t want to eat at all. You would kind of latch on, but you didn’t suck. Mommy was worried you may be tongue tied, but you weren’t. You slept in your little clear cradle, and I learned later that you didn’t like it and you don’t like sleeping flat at all. Mommy and Daddy had a hard time with the swaddle, haha, but you LOVED a tight swaddle! Once an arm was out of it, you were not happy at all. You had a little coughing episode that scared us, and a nurse came in to show us how to help you get the yucky stuff out.
Day 2- You had lots of visitors! Grammy was there to see you being born, and Nana and PaPa Poo and Grandma Jill came to visit this day. You were such a good girl and didn’t cry at all during the day. Today you liked the paci, but it wouldn’t last for long. That night I put you in the bed with me and you slept like a charm. You finally nursed that night and I was so proud!
Day 3- We were discharged from the hospital! Grammy, Nana and Papa Poo helped us gather everything and load you into the car. Daddy put you in the carseat and away we went on your first car ride! You did great and slept the whole way home. Col. & Mrs. Frank came over to see you and give you a thoughtful present. Your first night home was a rough one. You cried a lot and I didn’t know what you needed. I was feeding you every hour and my milk had not come in yet….so I think you were just hungry.
Day 4- Grandma Jill and Great Grandma Lyssy came to visit you. You were a good girl. You were nursing every hour-1.5 hours. That night mommy’s milk came in!! You had a much better night because you were fuller. Grammy can really get a good burp out of you! You decided today that the paci is not for you....I think you are just smart and realized it wasn't mommy :) Daddy and Mommy slept in the living room on the couches while you slept in your swing.
Day 5- Grandpa Doug, Meg, Uncle Derek, Grandpa Harm, and Uncle Justin came to visit you. You were a good girl and everyone loved you so much. Grammy, Grandpa Doug, and Daddy made a big meal and it was yummy! That night we slept with you in our bed with a blanket under your head and you did GREAT! You were stretching your feedings out to every 1.5-2.5 hours so that was a welcome relief for mommy. Breastfeeding you is a bit hard sometimes….we are still learning each other and you are VERY picky about your position when you feed. Sometimes you make your “mad face” at my boob because you aren’t latched on correctly. We are learning together though :)
Day 6- Everyone left and it was just you me and your daddy. You now are completely out of the meconium stage. Mommy’s milk really came in and we are battling some engorgement. You will latch on and unlatch a lot because you can’t get a good latch. Sometimes it’s really frustrating because I know you are so hungry and I just want to help you. You are now stretching your feedings out to 2-3 hours!!! We took your first trip in Daddy's truck today. We went to the car wash and and auto parts store and you did really well! You slept well in our bed again.
Day 7- Today you had your 1 week check up at the Dr. We saw nurse Mary and you had a great appt! You had lost 5oz while in the hospital, but today you gained that back plus 2 oz!!! Mommy was SO proud of you!! All of our hard work is paying off. You had clear lungs and tummy and no jaundice at all. Mary did the Bilirubin test and you were at a 4 which is great! You are getting more hungry so I’m giving you both breasts at a feeding, this seems to be helping the engorgement and helping you stretch out your feedings. We also gave you your first bath at home. We undressed you and your daddy was holding you while I adjusted the water, and you PEED all over us!! It was so funny trying to find out where this wet stuff was coming from.....and it was you :)

The Miracle Blanket

Sounds like mommy and baby are doing wonderfully! :) So happy to hear breastfeeding is going well. Funny how similar I think our Em's are...Emory hated sleeping on her back in the hospital. She was constantly kicking her feet out and pulling her arms out of her swaddle. Wears me out just thinking about it. I'd wake myself up too if I was hitting my self with my very active hands like she does. As soon as she was free, she was awake. Babies transition from active sleep to deep sleep. Rapid eye movement or smiles you see in her sleep (i.e. active sleep). She could wake up any second. A good swaddle keeps them in that nice sleep mode, allowing them to transition into deep sleep. Something we picked up on over time. Needless to say, we purchased a miracle blanket around 4 weeks, and still use it every night. It is the only swaddle we have found that keeps her snug and so therefore less likely to wake herself because she has kicked her way out. Now she is able to kick her feet out every once in awhile. Which makes us laugh. But other than that, we love our miracle blanket. And we also have that same snuggabunny bouncer. Emory chats with the birds, Mr. Blue Bird and Mrs. Pink Bird. Emily is beautiful and healthy, which means she is being cared for and loved so so much! It takes a lot of learning, knowing their cries, needs, etc. But it all comes in time. You are doing great!!! :)
